Japan is starting a new project in the ocean. This project is near Minamitorishima Island. The government wants to find critical minerals in the deep sea. These minerals are important for electric cars and high-tech tools.

The workers use a special ship and long pipes. They want to lift “rare-earth mud” from 6,000 meters under the water. This is very deep. The goal is to lift 350 tons of mud every day. This is a big test for the Japanese supply chain.

Japan needs these minerals for its industry. Currently, China sells most of these minerals to the world. Japan wants its own minerals to protect its economy. This test happens inside the Japanese exclusive economic zone (EEZ).Scientists will check the project in January and February. They want to see the feasibility of the system. They need to know if the technology works well. If the test is good, Japan will start full-scale mining in 2027. This is the first time a country tries to lift mud from such a deep place.
